The Creative Process of PLAY NOW!

Image
The Creative Process of PLAY NOW! (The button logo totally works!) One day, a user on the Unity Slackers Slack group shared a video of a brief after-work project he'd done before bed that day. It was a Virtual Reality game in which he had put himself on a platform with the control of two virtual hands, and in the distance, you could see pictures appearing and coming towards him. They were pictures of pop-up advertisements-- the kind you see and know they're fake in an instant-- and as they came up close to him he was swatting them away with his virtual hands. Over time, more and more appeared, starting to fill the screen. They smacked him in the face, he pushed them away; another got in his face, he grabbed it and used it to whack other ads away; then tossed it aside when he was done, ready for more. It was chaos-- and hilarious! If I could find the video I would just paste it here, but it's been at least a year since then and it's lost in the ava

Month-long Project 2 - PLAY NOW!

Oh hello, raving fans—long time, no see! Or at least, no news from us. Though you haven’t heard much from us, we’ve been working away behind the scenes on our newest project: PLAY NOW! This is another month-long exercise, designed to build our skills, refine our process, and showcase what we can do. We’re just finishing up week two of development, and we’re excited to show you how far we’ve come! If you ever wondered how the world is going to end, your journey is at its conclusion. Zombie apocalypse meets extreme advertisement spam—an Ad-pocalypse, if you will! The game is designed to create a spooky environment as you begin, wandering through a dark, hazy landscape, uncertain of where to turn…when you start to see hazy shapes in the distance, turning towards you and rushing in your direction. It’s a frightening moment to realize something is directly behind you, but it is mixed with the hilarity of spam crowding in your face, creating an odd sort of semi-frightening, oddly fun

PLAY NOW! Development Log - Week 1

This is the first upload of our game  PLAY NOW!  It's supposed to be our MVP (minimum viable product,) but it's really a fair bit more than that, so this is more like our first weekly release in our month-long game dev cycle. (Which is good, because we're already in the second week of development, so we better be past our MVP.) In this version we're testing some of the unique core gameplay concepts of our game: destroying ads by different methods, including clicking the X button on digital ads; and finding the buttons while avoiding ads to win the game. More importantly, we're testing the concept of a humorous zombie apocalypse game where you get spammed by ads to see if it's really as funny as we think it should be. The spawning of ads is a little funky in this version, but we're working on improving that. Some other things are bound to be buggy or just not very well designed at this point, so be patient with that. We appreciate your help in t
